Hitchcock's birds // Ptaki jak u Hitchocka

While looking at the window I got interested by rooks sitting on a birch.  There were many of them and they were all crowing loudly. So I went outside to take a closer look at them. I often see these birds because my aunt feeds them by throwing bird seeds on the ground. That's why they always stay close to my house.

Wyglądając przez okno, zauważyłam stado gawronów siedzących na brzozie. Było ich całkiem sporo. Wyszłam więc na dwór, aby przyjrzeć im się bliżej. Często widuję te ptaki, bo moja ciotka je dokarmia, rzuca im różnorakie ziarno na ziemię, a one oczywiście trzymają się miejsca, gdzie mają stały dostęp do jedzenia.

When I was getting closer to the tree, birds started to fly away making a lot of noise.
I got the feeling as if I were in the Hichcock's movie :)

Gdy tylko pojawiłam się na horyzoncie, to ptaki zaczeły uciekać robiąc mnóstwo hałasu. Przez chwilę mogłam poczuć się jak w filmie Hitchocoka :) 

When I was heading home, I took a few photos of a snowy garden.

Snow covering the ground surely looks like a soft cover, it reminds me of cotton. Plants should feel cozy under such winter blanket.

Wracając do domu zrobiłam kilka zimowych zdjęć.

Leżacy śnieg przywodzi mi na myśl puchową kołderkę, albo wełnę, myślę, że rośliny mają pod taką kołderką przyjemnie.

In February I started sowing first chilies. Currently my biggest pepper is Royal Black variety. I have only one plant of it, so I hope to save some seeds. Of course if they turn out to be worth saving.

W lutym zaczęłam wysiewać pierwsze papryki chili. Obecnie największą z nich jest odmiana Royal Black. Mam tylko jeden egzemplarz z odmiany, więc jeśli mi się spodoba, to pozyskam z niej nasiona.

Last year I had a break in growing eggplants. Two years ago I got poor crop of eggplants and we lacked ideas how to use them in the kitchen, so I thought it would be useless to grow them again. I was right, last year we didn't grow any and we didn't miss them. But, this year I found Syrian Stuffing seeds that I had bought two years ago and never sowed them. Maybe they're worth sowing? We'll see. I also chose two Ethiopian eggplant (solanum aethiopicum) varieties: Red China and Pumpkin on a Stick. Despite their bitter taste which I don't like, they look fantastic as a decoration.

This is all of my eggplants harvest in 2016, not satisfying at all.

W zeszłym roku miałam przerwę w uprawie bakłażanów, bo dwa lata temu zebraliśmy zaledwie kilka owoców i nawet nie mieliśmy na nie pomysłu w kuchni. W zeszłym roku nie mieliśmy bakłażanów w warzywniku i nawet za nimi nie tęskniliśmy. W tym roku znalazłam nasiona odmiany Syrian Stuffing, które kiedyś kupiłam, ale nie zdążyłam wysiać. Może okażą się warte uprawy? Zobaczymy. Dodatkowo wysiałam dwie odmiany etiopskiego bakłażana Red China oraz Pumpkin on a Stick. W smaku są może niezbyt przyjemne, ale za to wyglądają bardzo dekoracyjnie.

A tu etiopskie bakłażany, które uprawialiśmy trzy lata temu. Red China i Pumpkin on a Stick, ale nie wiem, który jest który, bo wyglądają niemal tak samo.

I used the seeds I had saved two years ago. They germinated surprisingly fast. Now I have to put them in the pots.

Użyłam swoich, zebranych nasion. Ku mojemu zdziwieniu wykiełkowały bardzo szybko, muszę je tylko umieścić w doniczce.

I also picked a few tomato varieties I'm planning to grow this year but I think I might change the tomato list for a few times before I germinate them in mid March.
This nice looking packet of Idyll cherry tomato seeds my son chose when we were at the supermarket. He wanted to have his own seeds :)

Wstępnie wybrałam też kilka odmian pomidorów, które zamierzam wysiać w tym roku, ale myślę, że lista może jeszcze ulec zmianie zanim dojdzie do wysiewów w połowie marca. Tę kolorową paczkę nasion pomidora koktajlowego Idyll wybrał sobie mój syn, gdy bylismy na zakupach. Powiedział, że chce mieć jakieś swoje nasionka. No więc ma :)

Tomatoes everywhere!

We all love tomatoes!

Tomatoes are for gardeners like gold for pirates :) Ok, I don't mean we steal them or kill for them - but one is clear - we love them. If there wasn't so much interest in them, there wouldn't be so many tomato varieties.

Growing tomatoes in my region is always risky. 

Our plot is situated among forests and a clearing, therefore humidity is quite high. High humidity is the cause of early and late blight occurrence. 

That's why wet summers amount to no tomatoes :(

This year isn't perfect for growing tomatoes. We had cold and rainy spring, then July was wet as well. At the beginning, the plants were growing in a warm foil greenhouse, but one June wind storm destroyed their cozy house. 

Many plants were uprooted because they had been earlier tied to the ceiling and the first clusters were lost. I had to plant them once again but it took some time for them to take roots and adapt to new growing conditions. 

Finally, August brought tomato plants the feeling as if they were growing in the tropics :) 

This led to massive ripening.

The first harvest was a bit late, but it was long awaited :)

I like taking photos of harvested vegetables and fruits because such photos remind me of art, colourful, with juicy and vibrant shades, that's why when I have a time to do it, I always take a photo :)

The beginning of August was bad for us, because all of our tomatoes had been infected with blight, and we couldn't save them. I picked all green tomatoes, hoping they will mature at home. Unfortunately 90% of tomatoes were infected too, and they rot.

Początek sierpnia był dla nas pechowy, bo zaraza ziemniaczana zaatakowała wszystkie pomidory i nie udało nam się ich uratować. Zerwałam więc wszystkie zielone owoce, bo miałam nadzieję, że dojrzeją w domu. Niestety, ale większość jednak zgniła.





That day, I harvested also all young carrots and young beets, because I was redesigning the vegetable garden
Tamtego dnia zerwałam tez wszystkie młode buraczki i marchew, ponieważ musiałam przerobić trochę warzywnik.

Of course, more cucumbers and courgettes :)
Oczywiście, coraz więcej ogórków i cukinii :)

Next time I will show you what I have yet to harvest in the following month. Some peppers and pumpkins are almost ready :)
